Have you tried to learn a language and it just didn’t stick?

As a former High School Spanish teacher, I saw that the way we have been teaching language isn’t working. It is boring and outdated and rarely yields results. I knew there was a better way for people to learn a second language and I wanted to include diverse communities in a way that they haven’t been represented before.

Meet Your Instructor

As a lifelong learner and lover of language and education, I became an educator, teaching Spanish with the passion to provide it as a doorway for young people who search for meaningful connection, just as I did in my youth. I spent time teaching in Macon, Georgia before moving to New York City to teach in the Bronx for over 5 years. While growing professionally and personally in these experiences, I learned harsh lessons about the systemic failings of education and the limits that Black and Brown youth face when it comes to accessing language and cultural experiences. Yaprendí was born out of my desire to create a special experience for learning Spanish through culturally relevant curriculum, engagement, and programming that centers diverse people.

 I hold a BA in Spanish language and literature from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, An MA in Spanish language and literature with a concentration in linguistics from Saint Louis University in Madrid, Spain. I also hold an MA in Teaching from Relay Graduate School of Education in New York City. I have navigated living abroad in Spain on my own for over 3 years and I have over 10 years experience in teaching the Spanish language at a professional capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • No Shows

    Clients with scheduled appointments have fifteen minutes to check in for their intended appointment. If you do not arrive within 15 minutes of your appointment’s scheduled start time, you will be considered a No Show. Instructors are not obligated to meet with a student who arrives more than 15 minutes late for his/her session. No shows are non-refundable.

    Late Cancellations

    Clients must at least schedule 24 hours prior to their appointment’s schedule start time. Appointments cancelled within three hours of the appointment’s schedule start time (or within 15 minutes after the appointment has already started) are considered Late Cancellations and are not refundable.

  • The Yaprendí approach to language learning is a combination of two methods:

    The first is the Natural Approach coined by American Linguist Stephen Krashen in the early 80’s, in which participants go through 4 stages of developing communicative skills:

    • Preproduction- learning through listening and gestures

    • Early production - short phrases

    • Speech emergence- long phrases and sentences

    • Intermediate fluency- engaging in conversation

    I meet learners at whatever stage they may be in this process.

    The second method is called the Communicative Approach, mainly developed by linguists Michael Halliday and Dell Hymes in the 70s. This method puts emphasis on interaction as a means and ultimate goal of study along with the use of authentic texts such as readings and videos in the target language. We also teach grammar when necessary and upon request, but most emphasis is placed on communication and interaction in the target language.

  • Currently, Spanish is the only language offered. We do have a vision to include more languages as the organization scales. Feel free to submit requests and suggestions for additional languages you would like to see offered through Yaprendí Society.

  • Group sessions require a minimum of 4 participants and a maximum of 28 in order to effectively engage all participants in curated activities for Spanish learning sessions.

    You can register your group of friends or associates for a session or sign up as an individual and join a group of strangers who are on the same journey.

    Companies can register their employees for a session for Personal Development and provide desired results and a Yaprendí will curate a session to fit clients’ needs.

  • Yes! There must be a $500 deposit to secure your spot.

    After that, you can make payments at your convenience up until one month prior to the trip date. Your full payment must be completed at least one month in advance before the date of the trip.

  • You will need a stable internet connection, the zoom app and a camera in order to be present and more connected in sessions.

  • In-person classes can be arranged for large groups and businesses who are interested. Please submit the details of your request to yaprendisociety@gmail.com

  • Refunds are only provided if sessions are canceled by Yaprendí Society LLC. If you are unable to attend scheduled sessions, you must request to cancel at least 24 hours prior to your session in order to reschedule. If you request to cancel at 24 hours or more prior to your scheduled session, you will be provided with a coupon code in order to reschedule your session.

    Travel to Learn Deposit is non-refundable.

  • Additional learning resources are always referenced in private and group sessions. You will also be guided through how to use each resource provided.

  • Absolutely! Fill out a contact form with your desired objectives for a Yaprendí session and you will receive a detailed offer within 24 hours.
